As many teachers (and parents) are well aware, Gifted and Talented Students are not necessarily always good students. Often we see the opposite. Many truly gifted students have no desire to learn outside of their particular interest area (which could change at any given time) and subsequently do not possess the skills needed to survive non-negotiables in the school system such as standardized tests and end of year exams. Even worse is the real concern that many parents of gifted children share – this being that gifted students simply do not always know how to work hard and therefore might struggle in the workforce, despite having higher intellectual ability. Teachers face a very real struggle to engage and enrich genuinely gifted students whilst also teaching the rest of their class.
This course connects research on how to support gifted and talented students by first understanding their psychological needs. The course will provide teachers and parents with some practical strategies they can use to help gifted students learn to work hard on activities that may not necessarily interest them, and will provide gifted students with sound, evidence based reasons why they should learn to work hard.
This engaging course points students, parents and teachers to engaging and informative multi-modal texts including films, research papers, discussion boards, books and articles and provides a starting point for frustrated parents and teachers to begin to motivate their gifted student to enjoy learning by understanding themselves and learning how to develop and extend their innate curiosity.
